Seniors Golf

The Seniors Section of the Walhampton Golf Club is a vibrant and dynamic part of the club.

Open to any male (the Ladies make their own arrangements) member over the age of 55 and on payment of a one off subscription of £10. The section offers a range of competitions and opportunities for social golf.

Roll-up day is on a Thursday, teeing off at 10.30am in the winter (1 November to 31 March)  and 11am in the summer. There are usually two qualifiers each month, with the other roll-ups devoted to a range of relaxed and sociable competitions. The standard playing fee for the day is £3, this is used for prizes, charity donations and for expenses specific to the section. Over and above the Thursday roll-ups there are other club events in which seniors are always welcome to join.

Players attending a roll-up are included on a start sheet which is then ‘re-ordered’ with the result that the playing groups each week comprise different individuals which is a great way of meeting new people.

In addition to the roll-ups and other club events, the seniors play around twenty matches per year  (ten at home and ten away) against seniors from other clubs. The first match is usually in March, the last in October. These matches involve clubs from as far away as Avington Park, near Winchester, and Ryde on the Isle-of-Wight.

The Seniors Captain is chosen by the senior members and performs the duties for twelve months usually assisted by a vice-captain who takes on the captaincy the following year.

As well as enjoying friendly golfing rivalry and good fellowship, the seniors usually manage a significant donation to a local charity, chosen by each year’s Captain. Funds are derived from a variety of sources including weekly roll up fees, fines for a wide range of misdemeanours and raffles.

2018 Senior Charity is Naomi House and Jacks Place.

The essential thing about the seniors section is that one does not have to be a good golfer to be an integral part. Skill levels vary widely and enjoyment is the objective.
